When culture is reflected
I was the keynote speaker at the recent Keece Group conference in Noosa, where, once a year they take their key people away for three days of learning and development while allowing plenty of time to connect over food, drinks, and team activities.
Here are some of the collective group traits I observed.
They know when to be serious and when to ease off.
They engage in robust discussions and will wade into discussing conflicting ideas.
They have a ton of fun together and given that Keece is a national company, some rarely see each other in person except for this annual event.
Their language is one of warmth, often expressed with warm handshakes and hugs.
Safety, safety, safety. This is central to much of what they do and learn.
Then there’s quality workmanship and a commitment to excellence in all aspects of the business.
They are authentic. No pretence, just down-to-earth people who say it as it is.
They are keen to learn and are good at asking quality questions.
There is enjoyment in their work.
They work hard and play hard—well, some more than others.
These broader team traits interestingly, are largely expressed and led by the two founding company directors, Kabe Collins and Tayfun Sumer.
I’ve known these two leaders for several years and while each of them is quite different to the other, their shared values, beliefs and practices have been caught by the team. And given they have a people-centric approach, it’s no wonder.
What one sees in its leaders, one sees in the team.
A direct cultural reflection.

PS. Learning and laughter were captured in another post from the conference when I interviewed two project managers and two estimators, all while trying to impersonate Howard Stern.
Feel free to give your perspective on what makes for a great culture.
And I always love to know if you found this helpful by your click on the heart. Thanks as always for reading.
