Searching through photos for one of my previous posts I saw this one and laughed, and then thought, though we are one, we are many.
We encounter our hilarious selves, the happy and unhappy one, the reflective self, the pissed off one, the inconsistent character, the disciplined one, the impatient individual, the strong and weak one, the anxious, the lover, the hater, and so on—all rolled into the wonderful me, the wonderful you.
The one, is in effect, many. No wonder living with ourselves can be difficult at times—managing all these different characters.
And then, for those of you who lead others, while you might be responsible for say ten people, you might be dealing with many more selves that appear during the course of a day. Who you thought you were working with seems to have temporarily changed and I think this is where adaptable leadership is a necessity: flexing in the moment according to what we are seeing and hearing, seeking to meet the person where they’re at, and leading them from that point.
When we look at this woman in the photo, we get a read on what is going on for her, at the time. Being tuned into these behavioural expressions—both verbal and physical—provides an indicator of how to best work with them in the moment.
As I often say, working with people (and for that matter ourselves) isn’t always easy, but it sure can be rewarding.
