The purpose force
When I do strategy work with clients one of the things we uncover is the raison d'être, the reason for existence.
I recently met with a couple of business owners from Pandr Outsourcing. We covered some necessary and predictable business/strategy topics but when the conversation turned naturally towards how much they all love being part of this company, the conversation took on an entirely new quality. They became vibrant and eager to share their enthusiasm for being part of an organisation committed to helping families in the Philippines all stay living together, by providing viable employment options to locals.
Their faces and language lit up as they explained how they purposefully established their operation in a regional area of the Philippines, so as to create job opportunities there, enabling parents to stay with their children instead of migrating to distant cities for work, and missing out on those precious life moments.
Their sense of purpose and what they stand for with families is their happy drug and their daily inspiration for showing up at work each day.
Interestingly, though not surprising, this purpose has also created a strategic advantage. By choosing an uncontested region, Pandr can access staff more easily than the competition and this gives them an edge others miss.
Whether in business or personally, it’s good to reflect on what our major drivers are. Answering your “why?” and "what do I stand for?" helps access this purpose force. It serves to infuse everyday actions and transactions with life and meaning.
