Ray's 19 Rules for effective people management
We can’t motivate anyone but we can provide conditions that cause greater self-volition.
Some need to be told what to do; others asked what they think they should do; some left to do what they do. The wisdom is in knowing what stage a person is at in their development.
When people know they are valued, they are more likely to accept and respond to constructive feedback and advice.
Deal with toxicity quickly. Treating or removing a diseased plant from the workplace garden will prevent the healthy plants from becoming infected.
Short-term micro-management is appropriate on some occasions.
Some people are maintainers and enjoy the stability of routine. Others are developers and constantly need new mountains to conquer.
Gauge a person’s success and commitment by output, not time worked.
Autonomous working conditions need the guardrails of accountability.
People will bring their personal life into the workplace. Taking an interest in people’s out-of-work lives therefore is important.
Adapt your leadership style to the person. One size doesn’t fit all.
Providing development pathways helps people see the future, engaging them over the longer term.
Ensure people know what tasks they are responsible for along with the associated metrics required.
Don’t shirk from harder conversations and no need to sandwich it with praise.
Appreciate and invite opposing points of view.
Position people according to their strengths.
Linking a person’s self-interest with their improvement development speeds progress.
The more people engage in personally meaningful work, the higher their satisfaction, happiness, and motivation will be.
Always seek to link coaching, feedback, and accountability with training. The performance outcomes can be more than double to training alone.
Catch your people doing right and thank them. Intermittent praise is a powerful reinforcer.
