Put your smile on...
When travelling to Perth frequently, I would always dine at one Italian restaurant. The food was good, the staff exceptional—they were always smiling, enthusiastic, and positively contagious.
One researcher, in studying this emotional contagion, randomly assigned ninety-four business students to twenty-nine groups, giving them a task to do together. Within each group was planted a trained confederate—a drama student—who was instructed to demonstrate cheerful enthusiasm and serene warmth in some groups and hostile irritability and depressed sluggishness in others. His different emotional states had a direct bearing on the mood of the groups, along with their behaviours. Where the confederate was happy and positive, the group reflected a positive mood, which increased over the duration of their time together. Cooperation was greater with less group conflict, and individual task performance increased. And the converse happened: for those groups where the confederate was negative, depressed, and hostile, they reflected lower mood ratings, less cooperation, increased conflict, and poorer task performance.1
Intrigued by the restaurant staff and their consistent enthusiasm, I asked the maître d’ what their secret was. “Oh,” she laughingly responded, “I just always remind them to put their smile on as they walk through the front door.”
Maybe it is, just that simple…

NEW for 2026: The Emergent Leader
While this program is designed to support those who aspire to lead, as well as those newly appointed to leadership roles, seasoned leaders will also benefit. It seeks to highlight the nature of people while building relevant leadership skills and consists of both training and coaching—demonstrated by research to be a powerful dual combination.
The course strengthens a leader’s self-awareness, builds confidence in understanding people, and lifts their ability to create the conditions where others do their best work. Across the sessions, leaders learn how to communicate with more impact, go beyond managing to coaching, navigate issues early, and think beyond day-to-day operations. They also build practical systems for smarter time use, develop habits that sustain focus and energy, and clarify the kind of leader they want to be as they grow their influence.
The ten-month term of this program is designed to provide the time to reflect and embed each learning area within the context of busy work environments and workloads. It is also required to support ongoing change that will deliver benefits for years to come. It includes homework, monthly accountability/coaching calls and unlimited access to me—all to further enhance effectiveness.
Begins 12 February 2026.
