Meaningful work
Another week almost done. Happy Friday! As some like to watch and others like to read, you can choose either the 81sec. video or read the content below.
I started writing a new book almost two years ago. I’ve written about half of it. The process is grindy, stretching, and rarely rewarding. Many days I doubt myself and wonder why the hell I keep getting up at 4 am to write, read, and research. But there are some reasons I keep at it.
First, it provides a deep level of inspiration and mental firing.
But the second reason is the most vital: it is personally important. At times I get this sense of drivenness towards a want-to and need-to. My writing work connects with the deeper sense of the why of my life and also with my career in leadership development and executive coaching. It’s meaningful.
Meaningful work is not necessarily about work-type—farmhand, CEO, pastry chef, cleaner, or pilot—but rather, it’s about the why behind it, the meaning it gives us.
Some of you will already be involved in work that aligns with your personal why, to a lesser or greater degree. For others, the degree of alignment is not quite there but you are progressively moving forward. And yet, for others, life just seems to be consumed by the have-tos; a merry-go-round you inadvertently ended up on with a conductor who doesn’t appear to know when to stop the damn thing.
Whatever your situation, take the time to identify and honour your why. Let it breathe inspiration into your current work and help you transition more and more towards where you truly want and need to be.
Transitioning toward meaningful work warrants thoughtful navigation and sometimes, the well-timed courage to jump instinctually and chart a new course.
If today’s piece was helpful, I’d love to know by your click on the heart. And if you’d like to explore this area further, feel free to get in touch.
