Looking Up
Happy Friday once again. You can watch the 75 sec. video, or if you’d prefer, you can read the short piece below. And thanks as always for being here.
“Life is difficult”, wrote Scott Peck in the opening of his book The Road Less Travelled and, to differing degrees, we are all exposed to life’s inevitable difficulties.
One time, I remember taking a walk from home to the ocean. It’s about a 20-minute stroll to the beach and en route, my eyes focused on the concrete path before me. It wasn’t till I caught sight of a fully blooming rose bush just off to my right that I noticed how my mind and emotions were mirroring the grey hardness under my feet that I’d been focussed on till that moment. Instantly, I realised what beauty I’d been missing and my mood lifted.
The concrete path represented life’s hardness at the time. Yet, such hardness, navigated well was also the path that would take me to the ocean. I discovered in that moment, there was more than one way to travel. I could either walk with my head down, concentrating on the barren bleakness of the pavement or, I could look up.
I found that my experience was related to where my gaze was. It helped me focus on the aspects of the journey that made it easier, lighter, and more beautiful. Something as simple and easy as looking up and appreciating the gifts that were all around me, helped me understand the value of the journey, rather than being stuck with grinding it out till I reached the destination.
