Delegation: Building bench strength
I’ve always thought of delegation as a brilliant time management tactic, but what I’ve also come to see in recent years is that it’s also a brilliant way to build the capabilities of others. By involving team members in work that stretches beyond their current abilities, we cultivate both their skills and a bench of potential and capable future leaders.
I worked on a delegation process with a project manager (PM) where we distributed a number of his key tasks to some younger team members and upskilled them accordingly.
A few months later, they told me how grateful they were that their manager had believed in them and provided the opportunity to develop new competencies.
The PM freed up hours of his time; the team were inspired.
Our people want to be believed in and, for the most part, to grow in their skills and overall effectiveness. And senior management benefits from a deeper bench of capable talent.
