Communication circling
Have you ever looked forward to touching down at your destination only to circle in the air for what seems like forever, especially if it’s at the end of a long hard week? It can be a frustrating and impatience-inducing experience. We just want to feel the wheels connect with the ground.
Communicating with others sometimes has a more immediate touchdown. We connect and it’s effective; but other times we circle and circle and circle, feeling like we are getting nowhere. We can become frustrated and impatient with others.
I have coached leaders in effective communication for the last fifteen years and one area that has proven itself to have a significant and more immediate touchdown connection is that of behavioural adaption—both verbal and physical.
The reasoning…when I flex my behaviour to yours, I am saying you are important.
If you tend to be quieter, more reserved, and like to discuss details, then that is important to you. If you are more of the jovial type, love to tell stories, have a laugh and are typically big-picture, then that is important to you. If you are straight to the point, direct, and like bullet points rather than essay explanations, then that is important to you.
When I drop into your communication style, flexing my behaviour to yours, I am saying you are important and your preferences matter. I am more likely to connect faster with greater rapport.
It dramatically reduces the communication circling to a more immediate touchdown.
