Being the boss ain't easy
Waiting for a friend to arrive outside a restaurant, a man came out dressed in a way that distinguished him from the staff inside. As we caught eyes, I asked him if he was the boss. Good guess on my part - he was.
I then said, “So that means you’re the cleaner, psychologist, taxi driver, server, bar attendant, conflict resolver, recruiter, and general fix-it man.” He laughingly and wholeheartedly agreed.
Being the boss ain’t easy.
In my daily work of coaching managers, the challenges of their roles and responsibilities can be overwhelming at times. I am fortunate to work with good people who care, who take their position seriously and often work longer hours than the people they oversee. Many of them also have financial responsibility, which weighs on them at times.
If you work for a boss, be mindful of the load they carry and if you can take things off their to-do list, or you see another way of making their life that bit easier, suggest it to them. Work on being their biggest supporter and encourager.
And above all, thank them for their efforts. A little appreciation goes a long way.
